A 17-year-old girl has been left fighting for her life after she was critically injured in a horror hit-and-run.

Tara Houlihan was walking home from a party when she was hit by a driver now being hunted by police.

The teen was found outside a pub in Wicklow, Ireland, in the early hours of Saturday and was on life support in hospital.

Local councillors told the Irish Mirror that the incident had left the quiet village “totally devastated” as they hope for the best.

It is understood a local Red Cross member was first on the scene after the teen was found outside Lee’s Pub in Kilcoole Main Street at about 4am.

Medics soon arrived and took her to Beaumount Hospital where she was on life support.

Local councillor Tom Fortune said the area has come to a standstill as they wait in hope of good news.

Another local councillor, Grainne McLoughlin, described the situation as “extraordinarily sad” and called for anybody with information to come forward.

She said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Tara and we wish her a speedy recovery, and if anybody is out there please report it to the police.

“The atmosphere is subdued here, there’s a lot of people really upset. They’re a well known family.”

Cllr McLoughlin also praised the local community in their response and said that they will do their best to support Tara and her family.

She said: “The people have reacted in support and I think it says an awful lot about the village in general, it hasn’t lost any sense of community.

“People here really care and support each other, they’ll be rallying around Tara and the family.

“Kilcoole has never lost its personality and everyone will be here for them, all of Greystones and the greater area will.”

Gardai have reviewed CCTV footage and are on the hunt for a light coloured saloon which was traveling northbound through the village towards Greystones.
