Horror in Blackpool as suspected drink driver ploughs into pedestrians leaving several injured and pubs on lockdown

Several people have been injured after a suspected drink driver ploughed into pedestrians in Blackpool town centre.

The incident just before midnight sparked panic with a major police response and pubs and clubs reportedly locking customers inside.

Eyewitness told of victims lying on the ground as emergency services rushed to the scene.

Blackpool Police said the suspected driver has since been located and arrested.

None of the injuries are believed to be serious and the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related.

Revellers enjoying a night out spoke of being held in clubs and bars in the immediate aftermath.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: “Our officers in Blackpool are investigating an incident involving what is believed to be a drunken driver who has collided with a number of pedestrians in the town centre.

“The vehicle has been located and recovered and our enquiries are now focusing on arresting the driver and supporting the injured pedestrians.

“Thankfully, no persons have been reported having serious injuries. The investigation is being coordinated locally and is not linked to any terrorist act.

“If anyone has any mobile phone or CCTV footage of the incident, please would you contact Lancashire Police on telephone number 101 and quote log 1862 of 14th April.”

Blackpool Police later confirmed in a tweet that a 19-year-old man from West Yorkshire has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, drink/drug driving and causing grievous bodily harm.
