These were the dramatic scenes today as white supremacists clashed with anti-Nazi activists after a rally descended into a mass brawl.

The fight between at least a dozen white marchers and counter-protesters broke out during the planned event in Charlottesville in Virginia, US.

Shocking footage shows attendees – some, carrying the Confederate flag – running towards each other and throwing punches as the two sides clash.

Officials have declared a state of emergency after the violence unfolded at the rally, which had been organised by thousands of white nationalists.

According to Sky News, the clash appeared to occur when the anti-Nazi protesters approached the opposing side “with what looked like a wooden banner”.

They demonstrators were met by men dressed in armour and wielding shields – before the sides began battering each other, TV footage shows.

The events highlight a persistent debate in the U.S. South over the display of the Confederate battle flag and other symbols of the rebel side in the Civil War, fought over the issue of slavery.
