Liverpool have paid their respects to the victims of the Heysel disaster on the anniversary of the tragic event.

Thirty nine supporters lost their lives in 1985 when a wall collapsed at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels ahead of the 1985 European Cup final against Juventus.

Reds director of communications, Susan Black, placed a floral tribute next to the memorial plaque at Anfield on Monday morning.

Flags across at the stadium, training ground and other Liverpool club sites are being flown at half-mast throughout the day, report the Liverpool Echo.

Access to the Heysel memorial plaque is available to the public via the Anfield Road entrance to the Centenary Stand.

“We will always remember those who lost their lives on this day at Heysel and use this moment to pay our respects,” said Black. “Heysel is a tragedy that will never be forgotten, and today Liverpool Football Club honours all of those impacted.”

The disaster occurred before the European Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus on May 29, 1985, when events in Block Z of the stadium tragically led to the deaths of 39 people – mostly Juventus supporters – and left hundreds more injured.

Liverpool’s official club website also published the names of all those who perished as a mark of respect.
