Jimmy Anderson Moving to 500 Test Wickets Was Magical

What a moment for Jimmy Anderson, dismissing Kraigg Brathwaite to join the elite 500 club

Jimmy Anderson reached the magical figure of 500 on a day England took control of the third Test.

England owed their eventual 194 largely to Ben Stokes, who top scored with 60 runs before Stuart Broad lumped his way to a quick-fire 38.

Anderson got England off to the perfect start by bowling Kraigg Brathwaite to claim his 500th wicket to become only the sixth bowler to do so.

Broad removed Kyle Hope before Anderson added another to take his tally to 501 as West Indies finished the day 93-3 and 22 runs ahead of England.

Burnley gem is shining bright

That was a wonderful moment for Jimmy Anderson, joining the elite 500 club. I saw him first as a young Lancashire pace bowler and I've marvelled down the years at the way he has developed his career into an artist of fast-medium bowling. He has an economical action now, but watch his last five strides at the crease: they're really explosive. A Burnley gem.

Nasser Hussain, we have a problem

I received a letter in the post from a chap in Dudley. He was complaining about a DVD he'd bought, thinking it was about the American space agency NASA. Instead, after he'd settled down with a cuppa and three custard creams, he realised it was about our very own Nasser Hussain. He'd paid 50p for it and wanted his money back. He said the DVD was full of stuff about hairy short legs and keeping whippets. He sounded most put out.

The tail wags again

Make no mistake: it was tricky batting out there, so it was inevitable that Ben Stokes decided to take the attack on, which also gave a lead to Stuart Broad. It might have been better for West Indies if they'd given Devendra Bishoo a bowl. When a last-wicket partnership between Broad and Jimmy Anderson extended England's lead to 71, you couldn't help thinking the leg-spinner should have had a go.

Lord's has been pitch perfect

There has been a fair amount of rumbling on social media about this being a poor pitch. It's anything but. It's easy-paced and dry, and the extravagant movement has been caused by overhead conditions and the effects of the lights. You can't have it both ways. Back in the day, we'd have been off for bad light and no one would have played. Yes, the bowlers have held sway. But would you rather watch grass grow? Get them out there playing!

West Indies' need for speed

Kemar Roach put in a sterling performance for West Indies: he and Shannon Gabriel are a good combination. But in England, they look a third seamer short. Jason Holder's an all-rounder and a handy fourth seamer, but West Indies might rue their selection of Bishoo in view of the weather conditions and playing at Lord's in September. He hasn't been seen at all!
