Did Liverpool man Firmino celebrate before Lallana miss?

Roberto Firmino puts his hands to his head after watching Adam Lallana's shocking miss

Roberto Firmino had done his job.

As Liverpool poured forward, the Brazilian latched onto Georginio Wijnaldum's chipped through ball and flicked the ball towards the onrushing Adam Lallana.

The England international was seven yards out, the goal gaping. Having laid the ball on a plate for his team-mate to net a crucial late winner, Firmino slid on his knees in front of the travelling Liverpool supporters, arms outstretched. Moments later, he had put his hands to his mouth.

Lallana had failed get to meaningful contact and the chance - and a victory - slipped away.

The draw at the Etihad ensured Liverpool continued their impressive form against the other big sides in the division - they have now taken 20 points from 10 matches with the other teams in the top six.

But they came within a whisker of a crucial win the race for the top four. And Firmino knew it.

Liverpool had taken a second-half lead through James Milner - who was booed throughout the game by supporters of his former side.

The former England international slotted home his seventh penalty of the season after Gael Clichy was adjudged by referee Michael Oliver to have fouled Firmino.

Sergio Aguero equalised for City with 21 minutes to play before both sides came close to bagging all three points.

Four minutes before Lallana fluffed his lines, Kevin De Bruyne hit the post. It was a fitting end to a chaotic clash at the Etihad, which keeps alive both sides' hopes of Champions league qualification.  But it could have been so different.
