Richmond property crimes among topics for town hall

Richmond Police Third Precinct Cmdr. Emmet Williams says, "Our biggest problem is property crime," and there are numbers to back that up.

Statistics show that property crimes in Richmond's third precinct were well above the 500 mark for the first quarter of 2014. So far in 2015, there have been 44 property crimes.

Even though those numbers are trending down, police say property crimes are still a major concern for police and people living in Carytown, the Fan, and Westover Hills, among other neighborhoods.

We want the citizens to know crime prevention tips  -- ways to prevent some of these property crimes, locking the vehicles, locking their cars up locking their homes, locking their sheds," Cmdr. Williams said.

Thurmond Williams has lived in Westover Hills for over 20 years.

"I'm glad to see the police officers with their blue lights on. That really does mean good, because I know they are out there," Williams said.

Laura Graham wants more patrol cars on the streets.

"The city needs to probably extend a precinct across the river so that they are not trying to encompass two sides of the river in sections of the city," she said.

Cmdr. Williams says police have beefed up patrol in problem areas like Westover Hills, and will continue to look into issues as the community brings them to their attention.

"When we have serious incidents take place the community has always been stepping up to the plate and providing us with the information we need," he said. Cmdr. Williams and Richmond Police Chief Al Durham are prepared to address any concerns that residents may have at Wednesday's Town Hall Meeting at the ROC church on Midlothian Turnpike.
