RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The E-Z Pass fee debate could move to the General Assembly. Thousands of people have sent V-DOT comments against it and now they have some political strength on their side.

Delegate Manoli Loupassi sent a letter to the State Highway Commissioner opposing the new possible fee. He's hoping to flex some political muscle to get V-DOT to back down on the monthly charge.

Loupassi tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch he will introduce legislation against the fee. He predicts that he will have the full support of the General Assembly.

Back in April, V-DOT proposed the charge at a meeting. V-DOT says the monthly fee would help it keep up with costs of operating the program.

Several new toll roads are scheduled to open over the next few years. Nearly 25,000 people went on the V-DOT website to give their comments and most of the words weren't in favor of the fee.

V-DOT wanted the fee to be in place by July first, but dropped that deadline. The State Highway Commissioner says a decision will come in the early summer.
