RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The city of Richmond is opening its public pools, and that's a sure sign that summer is around the corner.

The city of Richmond pools will open at noon Saturday. It's free to swim, and the hours vary depending on the day.

These openings come just weeks after several scares at pools and the city wants to make sure you're safe while beating the heat.

Over Memorial Day weekend, two children nearly drowned and one man died. All of them were swimming in pools at different apartment complexes.

There are a few things you should keep in mind to stay safe at the pool.

  • Teach your children how to swim when they are young.
  • Life vests are recommended over floaties because it will keep your head above water.
  • Get rest if you feel tired.

Trained lifeguards are always on duty at city pools.

According to a Virginia study, swimming pools have the highest drowning rates among children one to nine years old.
