The actress played General Leia Organa, who was Princess Leia in the first set of movies which kicked off in 1977 with A New Hope.

It has been reported that Organa has a central role in the film after the murder of Han Solo, played by Harrison Ford, in 2015's The Force Awakens.

It has been claimed his ghostly figure will appear in The Last Jedi, as well as the ghostly figure of Obi Wan Kenobi.

Finn (played by John Boyega) has clearly recovered from his injury from Kylo Ren (son of Han and Leia) in The Force Awakens as he is seen in good health.

There is a new character Rose (played by Kelly Marie Tran), and a brooding, battle weary Kylo Ren (played by Adam Driver) is seen in black looking off in the distance. He has a noticeable scar on his face.

His character reportedly is in a bad mental space after he killed his father Han. It is not known if he is still under the control of Supreme Leader Snoke of the First Order.

General Hux (played Domhnall Gleeson) is seen in all black and Captain Phasma (played by Gwendoline Christie) is in her full metal costume as she poses with two Stormtroopers.

Also seen is Chewbacca, who reportedly is working with Rey now that Han is gone, and a Porg, which is native to Ahch-To, the planet Luke is hiding on.

Not much is known about the plot except that the movie begins where Force Awakens left off and there is a funeral scene for Han.

These stills are being released just days after it was announced the release of Star Wars: Episode IX has been pushed back by more than half a year.

The film had been set to hit theatres on May 24, 2019, however production has fallen behind schedule following the appointment of JJ Abrams as director.

It will now hit screens in December 20 of that year, giving it a similar release date to The Force Awakens and the forthcoming Last Jedi.

The Lost creator, who helmed the franchise's blockbuster return to the silver screen, was appointed following the firing of previous director Colin Trevorrow.

Fans are hoping for a more innovative story now the series has once again been firmly reestablished by Lucasfilm owners Disney.

Signs are obviously good on this score as Abrams is co-writing the film with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice scribe Chris Terrio, a heady combination to say the least.

As well as helming The Force Awakens, which made more than $2 billion at the box office, the 51-year-old also directed two successful entries in the rebooted Star Trek franchise, including the woeful Into Darkness.
