A student hit her former primary school teacher when he grabbed her hand and put it on his “private area”, a Darwin court has heard.

The man pleaded not guilty to eight counts of indecent dealings with four girls aged between 10 and 12, and one of aggravated assault.

On Wednesday, one of the girl’s mothers gave evidence about a text and face-to-face conversation she had with her daughter about the man’s alleged behaviour.

The woman said her daughter messaged her in July 2016, when she was interstate with family, and asked to move schools.

When the mother asked where she wanted to move and why, her daughter replied: “I don’t know anywhere and because [the man] tried to kiss me a couple of months before school finished and I asked doesn’t he have a girlfriend and he said I was his girlfriend.”

The mother then asked if anything else had happened.

“He grabbed me by the shirt and bra so I couldn’t move away when he tried to talk to me,” the girl replied.

“Then one day he pulled my shirt up and I said stop, but he said: ‘I have already seen anyway’.”

The girl said the incidents had happened at recess and lunch when she was kept back and that the man had told her if she told her mother, her mother would just “tell her off”.

The woman said she was in Darwin at the time of the conversation, but travelled interstate a few days later to join her daughter and other family members.

She told the court she had another conversation with her daughter while she was there where she started crying and told her there was more to the alleged behaviour.

“She said [the man] kissed her multiple times, always in the classroom at recess and lunch,” the woman said.

On one occasion, her daughter said she had retaliated.

“She punched him because he grabbed her hand and put it on his private area,” the woman told the court.

She told the court she called the police as soon as they arrived home in Darwin a few days later to report the behaviour.

The court also heard the mother had discovered Facebook messages between the girl and the man earlier in the year.

She said there had been messages from him saying he “missed her” and “couldn’t wait to see her”.

The woman told her daughter to delete the messages and block the man.
